So my friend Noom took me to an exposition of royal art at the Grand Palace that was being held in honor of the King’s sister who had died the week before. Mostly a Thai crowd, with very few of us white folk in attendance. Parked out side was a Thai version of a porta-poti: an old bus with (I guess) stalls inside. Noom used it and came out dripping perspiration from the heat inside. The operator of the bathroom bus had his kid with him . . . here’s the shot.
At every wat, temple, shrine, you’ll see these garlands left as offerings. I can’t help myself from taking pictures of them (go figure). This one stood out as it was just laid along the toe of a giant Buddha at a wat not far from the Royal Palace. Don’t know the name of the wat, we got there on a 25 baht tuk tuk ride that promised several wats along with a stop at an ‘official government’ export center (which, big surprise, ended up being an over-priced jewelry ‘center’ with dubious goods).
Yep, you knew it was about time for a monk photo, didn’t you? This one I took just after getting off the boat at the pier that services the Royal Palace. If you visit Bangkok and decide to do the palace, take a boat. It’s cheaper than the taxi or tuk tuk options, somewhat exotic, and you get dumped into a mass of Thai people on their way to one of the numerous active wats in the area.
