Bayon

Cambodia

Angkor Thom's Bayon. There are 54 of these towers at the wat, all with these huge faces on four sides. Probably my favorite wat for exploring. Lots of halls and tunnels; you can meander through the grounds discovering all sorts of little nooks and patios. Even though it (like most of the major wats in Cambodia) is crowded with touri, you can find yourself all alone quite frequently. Nice for a bit of reflection and rest.

Carving Detail

This is a detail of one of the carvings at Banteay Srei, the Women's Temple. It is about a 45 minute drive from Siem Reap. A drive with some of the most amazing potholes I've ever seen! The temple is much smaller than the other local major wats, but filled with these wonderful carvings, most done out of a pink hued rock.

Ta Prohm

This is Ta Prohm, the wat overgrown by large ficus trees. This particular tree is now known as the Tomb Raider Tree, which lends a Disneyland aura to the site . . . unfortunately.

Performers at Angkor Thom

Another shot from Angkor Thom. And another way to make money off of the touri. This is the male half of a group of local kids dressed in (semi-) traditional garb. Take their photo, or take a photo with you and them . . . now give ‘em money. Not that I’m against enterprise . . . I just don’t choose to participate. (Well, on the money end . . . a good zoom lens lets you take the pix for free.)
