What to do early morn in Chaing Mai? Grab an overpriced cup of coffee at Starbucks and sit out on the corner shooting photos of the locals starting their day. This is one of the numerous pushcart vendors who stroll the city’s streets selling food and snacks. In this case, it’s veggies (‘cuz an ear of corn would go sooooo good with my morning coffee!)
Even in the cooler climes of Chiang Mai the afternoons can get hot. So I retire to a streetside cafe, sip a beer or iced coffee and eye the traffic to see what shots present themselves. Across from my perch was the plaza fronting the Thae Pae gate where a vendor was selling food in little bags to feed the fish in the moat. More people were using it to feed the birds. This guy’s shot won the day because his stomach mirrored the bulge on the tree he was standing behind.
Tired of baht buses and tuk tuks? In chiang Mai you can also opt for a rickshaw ride. Uh, no, rickshaws are not a Thai tradition. But what does that have to do with anything when the touri will pay you to be peddled about in one? Not sure why the drivers are all ancient old men, maybe because you’ll pity them and take a shorter ride (for the same high price)?
