This is durian. Tastes kinda like a cross between pineapple, melon, and dirty socks. Smells like dirty socks the cat pissed on. Popular throughout Asia, it's not unusual to see signs posted in hotels warning patrons that durians are not allowed. If you get a chance, try one. Just hold your nose until you get a piece in your mouth.
The locals tie colorful swatches of cloth on thier long-tailed boats in Phuket. Not sure why, most likely for good luck or to protect the boat from danger. Makes for a colorful photograph in any case.
Aw come on now, what's a visit to Patong in Phuket without a visit from the local drag queens? This is one of the areas hardest hit by the tsunami, and the one I stay in most often. The drag queens (excuse me, ladyboys) are a famiiliar fixture in town and make a good living allowing touri to take photos of their glorious selves.
