Sucking on betel nut seems to be a major pastime in Sabah and Kota Kinabalu. This is a photo of the fixings. You roll a nut in a leaf and sprinkle it with lime powder before lodging it in your cheek. The gardening staff I dealt with in Honolulu (from Palau) chewed betel nut all day so I was familiar with both the practice and the red spit stains all over the sidewalks. | ||||||
