The earliest reports of stones’ metaphysical powers date back as far as the fourth millennium before Christ. They can be found in ancient Sumerian writings and the transcriptions from Indian verdic texts. Written 5000 years ago by Shen Nung, the Red Emperor, the first Chinese medical book details descriptions of gemstones and their influence on the human body.

Every advanced, ancient civilization knew of the healing properties of stones. Whether carried in leather pouches or worn and talismans and amulets, gemstones were known to strengthen those who wore them and to protect them from danger, sickness, and disaster. The Greek philosopher Aristotle spoke of the healing power of stones. Romans carried cut stones to ward off illness and bad luck. The Egyptians wore amulets made of amethyst, hematite, jasper, carnelian, or lapis lazuli to harness the powers of these ancient stones. Further evidence of the significance attributed to gemstones can be found in the many references to them in the bible.

Today, semiprecious gemstones are still widely use for their therapeutic properties. Each stone has its own unique characteristics that release specific energies in the body and mind. While the ancients relied on faith, today science has provided an explanation of how gemstones effect our lives:
